He is the son and disciple of Padmabhushana Dr. V. Doreswamy Iyengar - veena artiste par excellence of the glorious Mysore school of veena playing. He underwent rigorous training under the tutelage of his father and has given innumerable duet performances with his father as well as critically acclaimed solo performances in India and abroad. He was a part of his father's Pancha veena troupe that performed in Russia and at the prestigious Festival of India in Germany. The highlights of his artistry lie in his natural flair for purity of notes, ragas opulent with mellifluousness and bhava, expertise in rhythm and smoothness of style. He enjoys the distinction of performing as a Top grade artiste of All India Radio and brought laurels to Karnataka by performing numerous national programmes on AIR and Doordarshan. He has been honored as the Best Veena Player at the Madras Music Academy for many years and he is also the recipient of numerous other awards. Balakrishna is the Asthana Vidwan of the Kanch Kamakoti Samstanam and his aim is to preserve and sustain the authentic classicism of the Mysore veena tradition - the Mysore Baani for posterity. In this endeavour he is grooming disciples several of whom are currently well known AIR artistes and concert performers.
