Bombay Sisters as they are popularly known, Smt. C. Saroja and Smt.C. Lalitha, hail from Trisoor, Kerala. They are the daughters of Smt. Mukthambal and Shri. N.Chidambara Iyer. Their father had to move to Bombay where he worked as an electrical engineer with the Western Railways. The girls were initiated into Carnatic music by their elder sister Smt. Sethu Mahadevan. Later, they come under the tutelage of Shri. H.A.S. Mani(popularly known as Chellamani Bhagavathar) of Bombay. During this period, the sisters participated in many competitions and won several laurels. They received the Govt. of India Cultural Scholarship for higher studies and proceeded to study in Chennai at the Central College of Carnatic Music in Adyar. As luck would have it, they came under the direct tutelage of Musiri Shri. Subramania Iyer, Principal of the college. They moved on to train under Shri. T.K.Govinda Rao, a primary disciple of the Musiri style. They continue to be students of Shri. Govinda Rao till today. The sisters started their prestigious concert career in 1963 steadily climbing the ladder of success, collecting many awards and accolades along the way. The sisters are Top Grade A artists of the All India Radio. Having music as a vehicle, the sisters have been involved in many philanthropic gestures.
