Palai Ramachandran

He started training under a renowned musician in Kerala, the late Shri. Bhaskara Menon. Later, when he was a Ganabhooshanam diploma student at the Tiruvananthapuram Swati Tirunal Music College, he had the good fortune of being taught by the Bheeshmacharya of Carnatic Music, Sangeetha Kalanidhi Padma Vibhushan Semmangudi Shri. Srinivasa Iyer. One opportunity led to another, and before he knew it, he continued on his musical journey to Chennai, to further his learning in the traditional "Gurukulavasam" style under the same teacher for another decade. During this period, he absorbed the Semmangudi style completely. Following this, he effectively balanced a family in Kozhikode and a career as a vocal support to his Guru for an astounding 40 years, until the doyen's last concert in year 2000. All through, being conferred the title of 'Top Grade' by the All India Radio, Kozhikode, he can boast of a parallel career with the station spanning three decades. This experience saw him emerge as a teacher of Carnatic music with a program called 'Learn to Sing'. He is one dedicated teacher, never forgetting the smallest of nuances in any song, to keep the banner of the Semmangudi bani flying high. He has given several solo concerts as well. Shri. Ramachandran has traveled to many countries of the world as an ambassador of Carnatic music. He has been presented several awards and titles including the prestigious T.T.K. award by the Madras Music Academy in 2008 and the very latest, the 2009 Semmangudi Memorial Award by the Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana committee, celebrating the centenary year of his guru.
