Sudha Raghunathan

Padmasri, Kaliamaamani Sudha Raghunathan started her initial music training in Carnatic music under her mother, Smt. Choodamani. She continued under Shri. B.V.Lakshmanan for a few years. The turning point in her classical training was in the year 1977, when she received a two-year Central Government Scholarship for young artists for advanced training. She was very fortunate at this time to have come under the motherly wings of Padma Bhushan,Sangeetha Kalanidhi Smt. M.L.Vasanthakumari, whom she really addressed as "Amma". She became one of MLV's foremost disciples and had the special privilege of providing vocal support to her in most concerts between the years 1978-1987, traveling widely within and outside of India. Academically as well, she has a record of being one outstanding student, having completed post graduate studies in Economics. During her time at college, she exhibited prowess in the areas of debate, drama, quiz, and essay writing. She is a top-ranking artist of the All India Radio, Chennai and performs regularly for the radio as well as the Doordharshan, India. Her concert schedules can make one's head spin. It is no exaggeration then, to say that one can shortlist the sabhas or countries she has not sung in, rather than the other way around. Prizes in music she has won by the hundreds – over 250 in all. Titles and awards have been generously heaped on her, albeit for the talent within. She has carved a niche for herself in the international music scene, representing India and particularly Carnatic music in various festivals the world over. Her golden voice has been captured on many tapes, CDs, and DVDs for those who have not had the opportunity to see her live Commensurate with all the glory she has received, Sudha has given back to the community with equal fervor. In 2000, she instituted the "Samudhaaya Foundation." This trust, for which she holds the position of Managing Trustee, covers a wide spectrum of activities extending to music and education and several charitable foundations. This time around we have the special honor of having her in Los Angeles, which does not fall within one of her regular concert tours.
