P. Unnikrishnan One of the most sought after Carnatic classical vocalists of today, Kalaimamani P Unnikrishnan grew up surrounded by music and musicians. It is no surprise therefore that he should have taken to the arts at an early age. His mother noticed his talents in music and enrolled him for classical music lessons under Sri VL Seshadri. He later came under the guidance of Sangita Kalanidhi Dr S Ramanathan, the well known musician's musician. Concert opportunities began coming in from 1990 onwards and his facile voice and musical talents put him in the august company of artists like Vijay Siva and Sanjay Subrahmanyan. He underwent additional training under Sri Calcutta Sri KS Krishnamurthy, Smt Savitri Sathyamurthy Sri PS Narayanaswami and Prof. SR Janakiraman. He also attended a six month training programme on the Veena Dhanammal bani conducted by Sangita Kalanidhi T Brinda and Sangita Kalanidhi T Viswanathan. . Unnikrishnan remains a top ranking musician and is an A grade artiste with the All India Radio. He has performed at venues both in India and all over the world. He is the receipient of numerour awards including the Kalaimamani award by the Govt of Tamil Nadu and bagged the National Award for Best Male Playback Singer. He can be credited with the bridging of the classical music – film music divide, which had last been achieved with great success by KJ Yesudass.
